Evangelization and Catechesis Conference

The Year of Faith: Catechists and Teachers as Agents of the New Evangelization is the theme for the Evangelization and Catechesis Conference on Saturday, October 20, 2012, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at St. Michael Family Life Center, 300 N. Broad Street in Canfield, sponsored by the Diocese of Youngstown Office of Religious Education.   Sister Judy Gomilla, MSC, keynotes the Conference with a presentation on The Power of One and offers workshops on Spiritual Fitness in the Year of Faith and One Anothering. Local presenters join her in offering workshops on fair trade, bullying prevention, sacraments, political responsibility, catechetical methods, and more.  

            Sister Judy, a native of New Orleans, is a Marianite Sister of Holy Cross. She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Theology and Religious Studies from St. Paul University, Ottawa, Canada. She currently serves as a Consultant to the National Education Council of the Pontifical Mission Societies in New York and as the Executive Assistant for Mission for the Black and Indian Mission Office in Washington, D.C. She has served the Church as an educator for more than 50 years in elementary, high school and seminary classes. Sister Judy is well known for her retreats and parish missions. She has ministered with a missionary spirit in the inner city, on the bayou and in the Alaskan bush.

            Exhibitors include Catholic publishers, religious goods stores, diocesan offices, and the Work of Human Hands fair trade. The fair trade products are handmade by artisans or grown by farmers living in developing regions around the world. The Work of Human Hands Program, a partnership between Catholic Relief Services and A Greater Gift, is a non-profit program of SERRV International, an alternative trade and development organization. Every fair trade purchase helps the producers maintain steady work and a sustainable income so they            

             The $30.00 per person Conference registration includes lunch, morning refreshments, and parking.   Registration is $25.00 by October 10. Participants are eligible for up to 5 hours of religious education certification credit. Catholic school teachers employed by the Diocese of Youngstown may be eligible to earn professional development credit for State of Ohio certification.
