Exec. Dir. Named for Catholic Charities Serving Portage and Stark Counties

                Mr. George R. Garchar has been named executive director of Catholic Charities Serving Portage and Stark Counties, an affiliate agency of the Diocese of Youngstown Catholic Charities Corporation (DOYCCC), effective March 11, 2013. Garchar succeeds Mrs. Diana Gray Stromsky, who has served Catholic Charities in various capacities since 2004.

            Garchar was hired as the executive director for Catholic Charities Housing Opportunities (CCHO) in 1999. He assumed the role of associate director of social action for the Diocese of Youngstown in 2006, in addition to his responsibilities with CCHO.

            Graduating Summa Cum Laude from Youngstown State University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in geography, Garchar also received a Master of Arts degree in geography and a Master of Community Planning from the University of Cincinnati in 1983, receiving the American Institute of Certified Planners’ Student Award.

            Garchar brings to Catholic Charities Serving Portage and Stark Counties an extensive background in planning, housing and community development, as well as experience engaging Catholic parishes, congregations and other groups in the work of advocacy, justice and public policy. A member of the Catholic Charities leadership team for over a decade, Garchar is a key educator in the Diocese of Youngstown on issues of Catholic Social Teaching and political responsibility. He has also assisted with local diocesan responsibilities concerning the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

            Garchar has served on various local Boards of Directors and Committees, including the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation; Interfaith Home Maintenance, Inc.; CASTLO Community Improvement Corporation; Wick Neighbors, Inc.; Mahoning-Youngstown Community Action Partnership; ACTION; and the United Way Planning Committee.

            Garchar is a native of Youngstown, Ohio, where he currently resides with his wife, Renee. The couple has two grown children.
