CHURCH AT HOME” Combined Collection set for May 31- June 1, 2014

The “Church at Home” Combined Collection will be held in all parishes of the Diocese of Youngstown the weekend of May 31-June 1, 2014. This Collection includes the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the Catholic Communications Campaign, and The Catholic University of America/Newman Campus Ministries national collections, and takes the place of three separate collections.

In 2013 parishioners responded with $45,164 for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development; $26,898 for Catholic Communications; and $18,065 for Catholic University and the Newman Apostolate.   Twenty-five percent (25%) of CCHD and 50% of Catholic Communications remain in our Diocese. The Diocese of Youngstown thanks the many generous donors to this one Combined Collection.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) gives poor and low income groups grants through self-help projects, giving community members a chance to work together to attack the root causes of poverty and injustice. In our Diocese, CCHD grants of more than $1.3 million in the past several years have enabled poor and low-income people to make significant changes in their lives and communities. CCHD projects have created affordable housing, helped save and create jobs, organized neighborhood anti-crime efforts, provided opportunities for community reinvestment, and helped families obtain credit. Twenty five percent (25%) of the collection stays locally. Additionally, in our diocese, ACTION (Alliance for Congregational Transformation in Our Neighborhoods), Beatitude House Green Clean Cooperative, and the Common Wealth Revolving Loan Fund received national and local CCHD monies to engage in faith-based organizing and economic development.

The theme of this year’s Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) is “FAITH/WORSHIP/WITNESS.” The CCC was developed by the U.S. Catholic Bishops to support values-driven programs designed to strengthen families and faith by bringing the message of the Gospel into daily life, and serves millions of people by sharing the good news on radio and TV, in print and on the internet.   Contributions to the CCC provide essential funding for the Church to spread the Gospel in the digital age. CCC supports Catholic media projects, including the creation of an adult Catechism video/DVD; TV documentaries and more. Daily liturgical readings and Scripture, podcasts and videos on YouTube are presented. In many dioceses, the CCC brings Mass to the homebound.  Half of the proceeds of the CCC collection stay in our diocese for Catholic Television Network of Youngstown (CTNY) productions and broadcasts of diocesan events.

While there are Catholic colleges and universities throughout the country, there is only one national university of the Catholic Church in the United States –The Catholic University of America (CUA). Founded by the Bishops of America in 1887, CUA strives to be a true Christian presence in the university world, known worldwide for its outstanding research and scholarship on behalf of the Church. Newman Campus Ministries help students on university and college campuses to form faith communities, achieve a more adult appropriation of faith, form their Christian consciences, educate for justice and foster personal development.
