Summer Catechetical Institute Scheduled for August 6-8, 2013

           The Diocese of Youngstown Office of Religious Education announces the Summer Catechetical Institute, August 6, 7, and 8, 2013, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The Institute features prayers, keynote presentations, courses, and practical workshops each day at two locations: St. Michael Family Life Center in Canfield, and St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Canton. The Institute is a local and cost effective opportunity for faith formation and skill building for parish catechists, Catholic school teachers, parish catechetical leaders, Catholic school principals, and pastoral ministers.

            The keynoters are Saundra Kennedy, National Consultant, Sadlier Religion; Cackie Upchurch, Director, Little Rock Scripture Study; Reverend Bob Bonnot, Pastor, Christ Our Savior Parish in Struthers; and Reverend James Korda, Administrator of St. Ann Parish in Sebring (beginning July 1, 2013), and Pastoral Director of the Catholic Television Network of Youngstown (CTNY).

            At St. Michael Family Life Center on Tuesday, August 6, Saundra Kennedy presents the keynote, Heralds of the Good News: Becoming the Best You Can Be, and one breakout, Keys to Proclaiming the Word: The Task of Catechesis. On Wednesday, August 7, Cackie Upchurch presents the keynote, Grounding Ourselves in the Great Narrative of Faith, and two breakouts: Little Rock Scripture Study,User-Friendly and Effective and Praying With Biblical Women. On Thursday, August 8, Reverend Bob Bonnot presents the keynote, Cruising the 50 Year Currents of Vatican II, and two breakouts: John XXIII, Dreamer Dashed or Visionary Vindicated and Vatican II on the “Extreme Importance” of Christian Education. Local experts offer Elementary Catechesis, a core course of ten hours, and breakouts on a variety of topics.

   Saundra Kennedy serves as National Consultant for Sadlier Religion. She has been a contributor and consultant for the production of many of Sadlier’s catechetical materials. She holds a Doctorate in Education and Religion from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. She has taught at the elementary, junior high and high school level and travels nationwide sharing her insights, experience and love of catechesis and Catholic education. Sadlier Religion is sponsoring her at this conference.

            Cackie Upchurch is a native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, who lives in Little Rock and serves as the Director of Little Rock Scripture Study. Her work involves writing, editing, lecturing, leading retreats and days of reflection, and helping people learn how to use the Bible in simple and effective ways. She is the managing and creative director for the Little Rock Catholic Study Bible, and is also an associate editor of The Bible Today, a journal of biblical spirituality. Little Rock Scripture Study is sponsoring her at this conference.

            Reverend Bob Bonnot currently serves as Pastor of Christ Our Savior Parish in Struthers. He was raised in North Canton, educated at St. Paul’s Elementary and Central Catholic before seminary training. He earned an M.A. in philosophy, an S.T.D. in theology, an M.A. in Religious Studies and a Ph.D. in Administration. He has served in various capacities in the Diocese, including as Director of Adult Spiritual Growth and Director of Communications. He is Secretary of the Presbyteral Council and a Diocesan Consultor,

            Reverend James Korda currently serves as Pastoral Director of the Catholic Television Network of Youngstown and will be Administrator of St. Ann Parish Sebring beginning July 1. He has served as pastor and associate pastor in Youngstown and Canton. His national assignments have included President and Regional Representative of CTNA Affiliates Association, Chairman of the Gabriel Awards Committee, and Producer of Pope John Paul II’s pastoral visit to the United States.

            Registration including lunch is $50.00 for all three days, $40 for two days, and $20.00 for one day. Workbook fee for Elementary Catechesis is an additional $14.00. The Summer Catechetical Institute is partially funded by a generous grant from the Catholic Extension Society. Participants can earn up to 14 hours of religious education certification credit: five for Tuesday, five for Wednesday, and four for Thursday. Catholic school teachers employed by the Diocese of Youngstown may be eligible to earn professional development credit for State of Ohio certification.
