DIOCESE OF YOUNGSTOWN RESPONSE TO SNAP PRESS CONFERENCE ON AUGUST 29, 2013

The information presented by SNAP at today’s news conference at St. Edward’s Church regarding Father John Warner was made public by the Diocese of Youngstown years ago.

In 2011, the Diocese of Youngstown received an allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor over 30 years ago against Father John Warner. The allegation was reported to civil authorities. At the same time, Bishop Murry placed Father Warner on leave of absence.

The allegation was investigated and the findings were presented to the predominately lay Diocesan Review Board which believed the allegation to be credible. The bishop then removed Father Warner from public ministry and made a public announcement of his decision. The bishop then sent Father Warner to a facility for treatment.

Father Warner is now living in another state in a restricted community and is engaged in on-going treatment. Bishop Murry has informed the bishop of the diocese in which Father Warner resides of his history and treatment. For legal reasons the diocese cannot disclose his specific whereabouts.

The policies and procedures of the Diocese of Youngstown regarding the sexual abuse of minors were followed in every respect.
