The Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, has
appointed Mr. Peter J. Schafer, director of Lay Ministry and Leadership Formation for the
Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, effective August 3, 2015.

A doctoral candidate at the Catholic University of America, Mr. Schafer earned a Master's
degree in Theological Studies from the University of Dayton and a Bachelor's degree in
Theology with a minor in Business Administration from Ohio Dominican College.

Most recently Mr. Schafer served as a religious studies teacher at Archbishop Hoban
High School, Akron. He also held various ministerial positions at Sacred Heart Parish,
Wadsworth, SS. Philip and James Parish, Canal Fulton, and St. Catharine Parish,
Columbus.

A member of Christ the Servant Parish, Canton, Peter and his wife Elise are parents of
three sons.

The Office of Lay Ministry and Leadership Formation is responsible for the development
and implementation of lay ministry courses, aiding pastors and their parish councils with
formation and enrichment presentations on the purpose, goal and operations of Parish
Councils, and the establishment of a parish leadership formation program which will
develop personnel for alternative forms of parish leadership.
