NCEA Responds to Recent Actions Taken by School Uniform Provider Lands' End

Press Statement

Friday, February 26, 2016

Arlington, VA - In response to the concerns of our members, and the recent news coverage surrounding Lands' End campaign that features an interview with feminist and political activist Gloria Steinem in its spring catalog and website, NCEA took immediate action and contacted Lands' End for a response.  Lands' End is a company that provides school uniforms for many Catholic schools and other religious schools across the country.

On Tuesday, the company removed the feature from its website and issued an apology to the news media. In direct response to NCEA's expressed concerns, Lands' End issued the following statement:

"Lands' End is committed to providing our loyal customers and their families with stylish, affordable, well-made clothing.  We greatly respect and appreciate the passion people have for our brand.  It was never our intention to raise a divisive political or religious issue, so when some of our customers saw a recent promotion that way, we heard them. We sincerely apologize for any offense."

This morning, NCEA was further informed by Lands' End that in respect for all of their customers, they have decided to discontinue the program and partnership with the ERA Coalition.

NCEA will continue to monitor the situation moving forward.
