Brief History:

The history of St. Ambrose Parish is an interesting one, and dates back to the last quarter of the 18th century. In 1885, Father Ambrose Weber, pastor of St. Mary Parish, Warren, Ohio, established a mission in Garrettsville. St. Ambrose remained a mission, until February 4, 1944, when it officially became a parish. The first Mass was said on Easter 1944 at a home on the corner of Maple and Center Streets. Then the present church property on Freedom Street was purchased, ground was broken for the new church on June 8, 1954, and the first Mass in the newly-constructed building was celebrated on April 10, 1955. Many pastors have since served the spiritual needs of the parishioners of St. Ambrose through the years. Today, the pastor also shares in the campus ministry at nearby Hiram College.
