BRIEF HISTORY
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Youngstown, is among the few original Italian churches in the USA. A symbol of the Italo-American people, it stands on a hill called Via Mt. Carmel (formerly Summit Ave.) & has been here for 100 years.

The first Pastor, Rev. Emmanuel Stabile, was followed by Msgr. Vito Franco, Rev. Henry Fabrizio, Fr. Joseph L. Iati and presently Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio.

Beginning as a basement church under Rev. Stabile, the church structure was built during the pastorate of Msgr. Franco and was dedicated on Nov. 4, 1916. After a tragic fire on June 12, 1923, the parish emerged stronger & more united and the restored church was dedicated on December 16, 1923. A new rectory, parish center and the St. Anthony Garden were the result of the pastorate of Rev. Henry Fabrizio, a successful effort on his part to halt the parisioner exodus to the suburbs. Rev. Joseph Iati's pastorate brought the restoration of the altars, frescoes and the installation of a new pipe organ. Msgr. Michael Cariglio, the present pastor, has continued the restoration of the church, extension of the St. Anthony Garden, the purchase and restoration of a building on Via Mt. Carmel which has become the religious education center, a memorial walk to honor our living and deceased parishioners and installation of outdoor stations of the cross.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church continues to be a jewel in the center of Youngstown, a tribute to the dedication of its people and energy and enthusiasm of its pastors. The parish has a full time Director of Religious Education for the children, youth and adult education. There are 1175 families from the area who live out their Catholic faith as members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
