Back to Exponent Menu Printer Friendly Page   LOCAL FEATURES Friday, December 20, 2002 Christmas letter from El Salvador missions thanks diocesan Catholics To the editor: I want to use this beautiful season to thank all the Exponent readers for their prayers and support for our mission work here in El Salvador. We can call this year one of construction . The building up of the Body of Christ here in Chalatenango is our constant challenge, and by the grace of God we saw improvement in our pastoral ministries of education of children and adults, social action , family life and liturgy. We are thankful for that We also saw the construction of 24 permanent homes in the parish as a response of Catholic Charities to the two major earthquakes last year. We hope to continue to put roofs over our poor families who lack them. We are building a 30-room pastoral center and retreat house, an urgent need for our parish and diocese. It is taking a lot of time and money, but we have a third of the project finished. If you want to help you can send donations through our diocesan Propagation of the Faith office (144 West Wood St., Youngstown OH 44503). Along with all the construction we have to struggle to feed some 350 families, who, for lack of employment, health or irresponsible fathers, need a helping hand from the Church. Personally it has been a good year, although I had a bout with pneumonia and an operation to remove a parathyroid gland. But generally my health has been and is good. As financial officer of the diocese I spent two months preaching and taking up mission co-op collections in nine parishes of the dioceses of Scranton, Buffalo and Youngstown. That gave me an opportunity to know a different and more vital Church than that pictured in the news media all year. I am truly grateful for all that the Lord has accomplished in us this year and know your prayers have been a big part. It is my sincerest prayer that each and every one of you and yours experience a Christmas season filled with warm relationships of joy, love and peace. May the new year be a prolongation of these same gifts. Rev. John P.
