January 25 Deaths

Arley B. Canfield, Jr., 55

A funeral service was held Jan. 14 at St. Thomas Aquinas High School for Arley B. Canfield, Jr., 55, of Alliance, who died Jan. 9, at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Canfield was a teacher at Aquinas.

He as born Feb. 25, 1952, in Akron. He was a graduate of Kent State University where he earned his teaching degree.

Mr. Canfield spent the next 33 years teaching industrial arts, psychology and various other courses at Aquinas. He was a former football and track coach at the high school and was active in pool, bocce ball and volleyball recreation leagues through the years.

He was a member of the Louisville F.O.E. Aerie 2374 and American Legion Post 548.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arley B. Canfield, Sr.

Mr. Canfield leaves his mother, Patrica (Gobeli) Canfield of Canton; two sons, Arley B. Canfield III of Missoula, Mont., and Matthew A. Canfield of Cambridge, Ohio; a sister, Lorraine Denman of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Joshua F. Canfield of Carrollton, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Father Clement Kuhns, C.PP.S., 86

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Jan. 19 at St. Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio, for Father Clement Kuhns, 86, a member of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, who died Jan. 16 in the infirmary of his religious community after a long illness.

Father Kuhns was born on Jan. 12, 1922, in Canton, to William and Laura (Valot) Kuhns. He entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in 1936 and was ordained on May 16, 1948.After his ordination Father Kuhns taught Latin and Greek at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind. He also served as assistant director of seminarians there. In 1962, he was appointed magister spiritus of brothers for the Congregation.

Father Kuhns entered parish ministry in 1970 as parochial vicar first of Corpus Christi Parish in Dayton, and then of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Cleveland. In 1972 he was named pastor of St. Henry Parish in St. Henry, Ohio.

He served as pastor of the Church of the Nativity in Lake Mary, Fla., from 1977 to 1983. He then lived outside the order for several years before returning in 1994. Ill health caused his retirement to St. Charles Center.

Father Kuhns was preceded in death by a brother, William Kuhns.

He is survived by a brother, Harold “Barney” Kuhns of Santa Maria, Calif.; three sisters, St. Joseph Sister Naomi Kuhns of Richfield, Ohio, St. Joseph Sister Laura Kuhns of Cleveland, and Rosemary Tonti of Fort Myers, Fla.; a nephew, three nieces and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
