February 8 Deaths

Sister M. Maddalena Angelicola, 80

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Jan. 28 at Youngstown St. Anthony Church for Sister M. Maddalena Angelicola, 80, a member of the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who died Jan. 25 at Park Vista Retirement Community, Youngstown.

Sister Mad-dalena was born April 5, 1927, in Carlantino, Italy, a daughter of Nicola and Angelina Lombardi Angelicola. She joined the Oblate Sisters in 1943, professed her first vows in 1946 and made her final profession in 1951.

Sister Maddalena came to the United States in 1949. She spent her initial years in McDonald, where she was local superior and taught kindergarten. In 1970 Sister Maddalena taught at her motherhouse preschool, Villa Maria Teresa, until 1972, when she was appointed regional superior of her order and eventually began a foundation in Toronto, Canada. In 1978 she was appointed the first director of the newly established diocesan priest retirement home, Emmaus House, in Louisville.

In 1988 Sister Maddalena returned to Villa Maria Teresa Preschool, teaching kindergarten. From 1994 until three weeks before her death, she served as director of Emmaus House.

She leaves a sister, Philomena (Guido) Todisco of Bisceglie, Italy; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Antonio; and one sister, Maria (Fiore) Maggio.

Helen I. Abbondanza, 82

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Jan 29 at Holy Rosary Church, Muse, Pa., for Helen I. Abbondanza, 82, of Canonsburg, Pa., who died Jan. 25. Mrs. Abbondanza was the mother of Faye Abbondanza, associate director of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Diocese of Youngstown.

She was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Canonsburg, a daughter of John Lewis and Frances Pauline Marunjak Klescik.

Mrs. Abbondanza lived her entire life in the Canonsburg/Muse area, where she was a member of Holy Rosary Parish and its Christian Mothers. She had been employed as a psychiatric aide at the former Western Center and then at Mayview State Hospital from 1967 until 1988.

Mrs. Abbondanza was a member of AFSCME Union, Muse Senior Citizens and the Ladies Auxiliary of Muse Independent Club.

She is survived by her husband, Albert A. Abbondanza, whom she married Feb. 10, 1945; two sons, Albert J. Abbondanza of Goldsboro, N.C., and Glenn J. Abbondanza of Wichita, Kan.; daughter Faye Ellen Abbondanza of Girard; a brother, Robert Klescik of Cecil Twp., Pa.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Karen M. Livitski and Jean M. Bechtold Dolence; and a brother, John Klescik.

Sister Michael Sisko, F.S.P., 77

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Dec. 8 in the Daughters of St. Paul convent chapel, Jamaica Plain, Boston, for Sister Michael Sisko, 77, a member of the order, who died Nov. 30 in Boston.

Sister Michael was born in Warren on July 6, 1930, a daughter of Elizabeth (Pleuyak) and Michael Sisko. She had been a member of the Daughters of St. Paul for 60 years, entering religious life in Boston in August of 1948 and making her final profession on July 1, 1956.

Sister Michael worked in the order’s book center on Rayen Avenue in Youngstown for a number of years, as well as in the order’s ministry of communication in other dioceses. Her work included visiting families and distributing Catholic literature. She had been stationed in Venezuela and in Puerto Rico (20 years). She worked four years in Miami, helping with the order’s Spanish apostolate, before returning to her community in Boston.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by a sister, Yvonne Pappalardo of Georgia; a brother, Fred Sisko of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was in the Daughters of St. Paul Mausoleum in Jamaica Plain.
