January 11 Deaths

John Regis Reddington, 97

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Jan. 9 in St. Charles Church, Boardman, for John Regis Reddington, 97, who died Jan. 5 at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. He was a former advertising/business manager and circulation coordinator of the Catholic Exponent.

Mr. Redding-ton was born June 16, 1910, to John Edward and Catherine Cleary Reddington in Youngstown.

He graduated from Youngstown Immaculate Conception School and St. Charles Preparatory School in Baltimore. He was also an alumnus of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., and took courses in business administration and advertising at Penn State and Youngstown State universities.

He began his long career at the Exponent as an ad sales representative in 1944, retiring in 1980. In 1974, the newspaper won the Catholic Press Association’s first place award for circulation promotion, due largely to Mr. Reddington’s work changing the Exponent from a primarily student-sold subscription-based program to the parish coverage program still used today.

Mr. Reddington served as executive secretary for the Downtown Merchants Association in the 1950s, was executive secretary for the Mahoning County Ohio Sesquicentennial celebration in 1953, and was a member of the 1976 Mahoning Valley U.S. bicentennial committee, as well as vice-chair for the Irish-American participation in that event.

As a Youngstown St. Edward parishioner, Mr. Reddington served the diocese as executive director of two Mahoning County Diocesan High School Fund raising campaigns. In 1979, he was honored by the Mahoning Valley Catholic Committee on Scouting for his contributions in that effort, and that same year was named Irish Man of the Year by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was founding chair for the Mahoning Irish National Caucus.

Mr. Reddington volunteered his time at the Ursuline High School Alumni Office in retirement. He was a member of the Cardiac Rehab Club at St. Elizabeth since 1983 and was a past board member of the Child and Adult Mental Health Board.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Miriam McNally, whom he married Dec. 30, 1940; his granddaughter, Traci Anne Reddington; and his grandson, Jonathan Jones.

He leaves three sons, John, Paul and Tom; a daughter, Miriam Jones; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Josephine B. Mancini, 91

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Jan. 9 in St. Joseph Church, Austintown, for Josephine B. Mancini, 91, who died Jan. 3 at her residence. She was the mother of Father Nicholas J. Mancini, pastor of Youngstown SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish and St. Stephen of Hungary Parish.

Mrs. Mancini was born Dec. 14, 1916, in Youngstown, a daughter of Joseph and Rosina Pepe Rosemond.

She had worked as a clerk for the Strouss-Hirshberg Co. and later as a baker with the Hathaway Bakery for 55 years. She was a member of the AFL-CIO-CLC Union and B.C.&T Union Local 19, receiving her 35-year and 55-year honoree pins. Besides her son, Father Mancini, she leaves a sister, Maryann Willmitch of Miami; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony J. Mancini, whom she married Sept. 29, 1943; two sisters, Angeline Naples and Phyllis Morrison; and three brothers, Carl Rosemond, Joseph Rosemond and Phillip Rosemond.
