April 4 Deaths

Sister Baptista Frutkin, H.M., 94

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered March 25 at the Villa Maria Chapel, Villa Maria, Pa., for Sister Baptista Frutkin, H.M., the former Mary Fern Frutkin, 94, who died March 20 at the Villa Maria Community Center.

She was born Oct. 19, 1913 in Cleveland, the daughter of Simon and Elizabeth Frutkin. In 1930, Sister Baptista graduated from Cleveland Lourdes Academy and continued her education at St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Youngstown, where she graduated with an R.N. in 1938. She then received a BSNE in Nursing Administration in 1941 from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Sister Baptista entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary on Jan. 5, 1932 from St. Mary Parish in Cleveland. She professed her first vows Aug. 19, 1934 and made her Final Profession Aug. 19, 1937. She served 47 years in the health care field in both the Youngstown and Cleveland dioceses.

Sister Baptista served in the Youngstown diocese for 25 years as an RN and former administrator of St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, Warren, and St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. Following her retirement to Villa Maria Community Center, she served as a receptionist and in the Ministry of Prayer. She celebrated her 75th anniversary in the order in 2007.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sister Baptista leaves her brother, Reynold Frutkin of Fishers, Ind., and nephews and nieces.

Paul J. Shagla, 85

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered April 2 at St. Columba Cathedral for Paul J. Shagla, 85, who died March 29 at Camelot Arms Care Center. Mr. Shagla was the father of James Shagla, local wedding photographer, who handles freelance assignments for the Catholic Exponent.

Mr. Shagla was born June 24, 1922 in Albania, a son of Theme “James” and Alexandra Xhaini Shagla, and came to America and Youngstown as a child.

He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving with the 104th Division, and managed several Youngstown Gray Drug Stores, retiring in 1987 after 46 years with the chain. He was a member of St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown and was also a member of AMVETS. Mr. Shagla married Margaret B. Roznaki Shagla on Oct. 5, 1946.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Mr. Shagla leaves his son, James P. Shagla of Youngstown; his daughter, Barbara J. Vega of Boardman; a brother, William Shagla of Austintown; a sister, Virginia Kamperman of Austintown; and two grandchildren, James P. Shagla Jr. and Olivia N. Shagla.
