May 2 Deaths

Sr. M. Charles (Mildred) Fields, H.M., 82

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered April 22 for Sister Mary Charles Fields, H.M. (Sister Mildred), 82, who died April 19, at Villa Maria Community Center in Villa Maria, Pa.

She was the former director for the Department of Social Services at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, and a registered nurse at St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, Warren. She held offices and served on numerous committees and boards, including the presidency of the Catholic Charities Mahoning Service League Board; secretary of the Northeastern Ohio Society of the National Association of Social Workers; the Youngstown Diocesan Charities Board; and the Board of Trustees of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown and Board of Trustees for St. Joseph Riverside Hospital in Warren.

Sister Mary Charles leaves her sister, Denise Resser of Palm Coast, Fla.; her twin sister, Margaret Begue of Tallmadge, Ohio; and nephews and nieces.

Father Robert Hill, 80

Private funeral services were recently held for Father Robert Hill, retired priest of the Diocese of Youngstown, who died April 17, 2008.

Father Hill was born Oct. 30, 1927, in Parma Heights, Ohio, the son of Edmund and Kathryn (Gavan) Hill. He attended St. Ignatius School, St. Ignatius High School and John Carroll University, all in Cleveland, and Ohio State University, Columbus, before attending St. Gregory Seminary and Mount Saint Mary of the West, Cincinnati. He was ordained May 25, 1957, by Bishop Emmet M. Walsh.

Following ordination, he served as assistant pastor of St. Stephen Parish, Niles (1957-1960). In June of 1960, he was appointed to the faculty of Ursuline High School, Youngstown, where he served until his appointment to the faculty of Central Catholic High School, Canton, in 1966. Father Hill was named pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Massillon, in 1971 and pastor of Assumption Parish, Geneva, in 1977. He retired on July 1, 1992.

In addition to his years in pastoral and educational ministry, Father Hill served on the Diocesan Senate of Priests, the Diocesan Board of Education, the diocesan Pastoral Council and as the Dean of Ashtabula County.

A brother, John Hill, survives.

William J. (Billy) Schraider, 52

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered April 23 at St. Patrick Church, Youngstown, for William J. (Billy) Schraider, 52, who died at his home April 19. He was the brother-in-law of Lou Jacquet, editor/general manager of the Catholic Exponent.

Mr. Schraider was born Sept. 7, 1955, in Youngstown, the son of Dorothy (Popovich) Schraider and the late William J. Schraider, Sr.

He graduated from St. Matthias School and Cardinal Mooney High School in 1973 and attended Youngstown State University. He graduated from Perkins School of Piano in Cleveland.

He was a member of St. Patrick and St. Matthias parishes, both in Youngstown. He served for many years as an usher at St. Patrick.

He leaves his mother of Youngstown, with whom he made his home; a sister, Geri Jacquet of Austintown, director of religious education at Boardman St. Charles Parish, and organist/music director at Youngstown St. Brendan; one nephew and three nieces; several aunts and uncles, including Father George Popovich, chaplain of St. Joseph Health Center, Warren; several cousins, including Father Stephen Popovich, pastor of Austintown Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish; one grandniece and one grandnephew.
