May 30 Deaths

Sister Bernadette Vetter, H.M., 90

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered May 20 at the chapel of Villa Maria Community Center, Villa Maria, Pa., for Humility of Mary Sister Bernadette Vetter, formerly Sister Mary of Lourdes, 90, who died May 16 at the center.

Sister Bernadette was born May 22, 1917, in Cleveland, a daughter of Louis and Marguerite (Keane) Vetter. She graduated from Lourdes Academy, Cleveland, in 1935 and continued her education by earning a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame College in 1942 and a master’s from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., in 1949.

Sister Bernadette entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary from St. Luke Parish, Lakewood, Ohio, on Jan. 17, 1937. She professed her first vows July 17, 1939, and her final profession was July 17, 1942.

She was well known throughout the United States and in foreign countries as the co-founder of The Center for Learning (with offices in Villa Maria and in Westlake, Ohio), serving for more than 35 years as its assistant director, editorial director and more recently as its vice-president. Her book “My Journey, My Prayer” was given a certificate of excellence by the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1977.

From 1961 to 1973 Sister Bernadette, served as General Superior and President of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary in Villa Maria. During her administration, she directed the renewal of the congregation, following the directives of the Second Vatican Council.

She taught at Mt. Marie Academy, Canton, which became Central Catholic High School, in the Youngstown Diocese. She also taught at her former high school and was the founding principal and later a theology teacher at Magnificat High School, Rocky River, Ohio. Sister Bernadette served as a member of numerous boards including St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, Warren, and St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown.

She was recognized with a national award from Sadlier Publishers for her work as an author, teacher and publisher in 1984.

Sister Bernadette was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Marguerite (Keane) Vetter; and her sisters, Jeanne Sewell, Mary Margaret Roddy, and Patricia Coughlin.

She leaves many nieces and nephews and their families.

Sister Mary Hilary Holz, H.M., 78

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered May 22 at the chapel of Villa Maria Community Center, Villa Maria, Pa., for Sister Mary Hilary Holz, H.M., formerly Patricia Holtz, 78, of Villa Maria, who died May 18, at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. Sister Mary Hilary was a former postmaster for 22 years at the U.S. Post Office at Villa Maria and a teacher in the Youngstown Diocese.

She was born May 21, 1929, in Cleveland, a daughter of Henry and Marie (Forgatch) Holz. She graduated from Cleveland St. Boniface High School in 1947 and continued her education by earning a bachelor’s degree from Cleveland St. John College in 1962.

She entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary from Parma Holy Family Parish on Jan. 15, 1948, professing her first vows on July 17, 1950, and her final vows on July 17, 1953.

In the Youngstown Diocese, Sister Mary Hilary taught at Louisville St. Louis School, 1953-54; Kent St. Patrick, 1954-55; Youngstown St. Brendan, 1955-57; Ashtabula Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 1962-63; and Massillon St. Barbara, 1963-75.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sister Mary Hilary leaves, a sister, Humility of Mary Sister Marguerite Holz, Youngstown; a brother, Martin Holz, of Coshocton; a niece and nephews.

Peter A. Tedde, 79

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered May 20 at Hubbard St. Patrick Church for Peter A. Tedde, 79, who died May 16. He was the father-in-law of Linda Tedde, notary for the diocesan Tribunal.

Mr. Tedde was born May 30, 1928, in Youngstown, a son of Antonio and Antonia Pani Tedde and was a life-long area resident.

He was a member of St. Patrick Parish and a stockbroker for WRP Investments in Liberty, Ohio. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s College in Kentucky and East High School in Youngstown.

Mr. Tedde was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank and Sam Tedde; and four sisters, Martina Saenger, Julia Smith, Rose Libbey and Mary Diorio.

He leaves his wife, the former Ruth G. Sauline, whom he married Nov. 6, 1954; two sons, Peter A. Tedde of Hubbard and Thomas Tedde of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Ruth Ament of Pittsburgh and Ann Joseph of Dallas; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Father Peter Chiodo, C.PP.S., 78

A Mass of Christian burial was offered May 19 at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio, for Precious Blood Father Peter Chiodo, 78, who died May 15 in the infirmary of St. Charles Center in Carthagena. He was a former pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Niles.

Father Chiodo was born April 10, 1930, in Homestead, Pa.., to Pietro and Michelina Chiodo. He entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in 1945 and was ordained on May 28, 1960.

Father Chiodo served for many years in parish ministry and as a hospital chaplain. After his ordination, he served at St. Mary Parish in Dayton, Ohio; St. Mary in Piqua, Ohio; and Holy Name in Cincinnati. He then served as a chaplain at St. Rita Hospital in Lima, Ohio, and as a chaplain to the Sisters of the Precious Blood in Dayton from 1972-77; and at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Dayton before he returned to parish work in 1983 as the pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Bradford, Ohio.

In 1988 he was named pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Mayfield, Ky. In the following years he also served at parishes in East Chicago, Ind.; Cincinnati; and Sardinia, Ohio. Father Chiodo became pastor of Niles Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1996. He served as parochial vicar at St. Joseph Parish in Wapakoneta, Ohio, in 1998. In 2003, he retired to the Transfiguration Center for Spiritual Renewal in Ludlow Falls, Ohio, where he continued to serve as a substitute in parish ministry.

He was preceeded in death by his two brothers, Joseph and Santo.

Father Chiodo leaves his two sisters, Claire Zuccarelli of Pittsburgh and Sister Mary Peter Chiodo, a Sister of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ of Columbia, Pa.; four nephews and two nieces; and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces.
