July 11 Deaths

Mary H. Babnic, 85

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered June 25 at St. Matthias Church for Mary H. Babnic, 85, who died June 20 at Forum Health Northside Medical Center, Youngstown.

Ms. Babnic was born in Youngstown March 20, 1923, a daughter of Steven and Julia Kvoriak Babnic.

She served in the U.S. Army Air Corp of Nurses from 1946 to 1953. In 1950, she was certified as an anesthetist by the Grace School of Anesthesiology in Detroit. In 1961, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Youngstown State University. She was employed as a Nurse Anesthetist for the Youngstown Hospital Association for 38 years, retiring in 1987.

An active member of St. Matthias Church, she took part in the church choir, the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, and the Golden Echoes Senior Citizens Group. Ms. Babnic was both a Reader and a Eucharistic Minister at Mass. She served the local community by volunteering to teach Slovak to those interested in learning the language.

Ms. Babnic held membership in numerous professional and community service organizations. Among them are the Retired Nurses Association, the American Nurse Anesthetist Association, the Military Women in Service Organization, Jednota, and Slovak Catholic Sokols. She was a member of the board of the Youngstown Slovak Sister Cities Program, as well as a life member of the YSU Alumni Association and a permanent member of ROTC. She also served as president of the American Slovak Cultural Association and was a past president of the Catholic Nurses of Youngstown. She assisted with production of the WKTL Radio Slovak Hour for many years. In 1983, she became the program director.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Stephan A. Babnich Jr. and by her sister, Dorothy Babnic.

Ms. Babnic is survived by two nieces, a great-niece, three great-nephews and a great-great-nephew.
