Back to Exponent Menu Printer Friendly Page   Friday, August 08, 2008 August 8 Deaths Ellen Boerner, 89 A Mass of Christian Burial was offered July 28 in St. Mary Church, Massillon, for Ellen (“Ellie”) Boerner, 89, who died July 24 following a brief illness. Mrs. Boerner had been a “stringer” for the Exponent for years, sending in news announcements from the Massillon/Canton area. She was born May 23, 1919, in Massillon, the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Ulli) Maurer and was a life-long resident. She had been the secretary at St. Mary Parish for more than 35 years. She was known for her attitude of cheerfulness and service, realizing that she was the first voice callers would hear when they contacted the parish for any reason. Mrs. Boerner was an active volunteer at the parish and oversaw its weekly bingo game for more than 50 years. She coordinated the Catholic Charities annual campaign for the parish. She was also the individual designated to locate a priest in the event of a sacramental emergency. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Boerner was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Boerner, in 1989, and a son, Bill Boerner, in 1992. She is survived by her brother, Dale Maurer of Massillon; a nephew, David Boerner of Massillon; a niece, Dorothy Lamb of Oak Park, Ill.; and many great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
