Back to Exponent Menu Printer Friendly Page   LOCAL FEATURES Friday, April 12, 2002 Diocese OKs closing Conneaut St. Frances Cabrini K-8; preschool stays CONNEAUT – Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has approved the closing of the kindergarten through grade 8 program of St. Frances Cabrini School here at the end of the current school year. However, the pre-school program at St. Frances Cabrini will remain open. The action comes at the recommendation of the pastor, Father Raymond Thomas, and the parish pastoral councils of St. Frances Cabrini and St. Mary parishes in Conneaut, and with the support of the diocesan Office of Catholic Schools. Diocesan officials said declining enrollment was the major factor in the decision. With only 44 students enrolled currently, and with a projection of even fewer next year, it was evident that the students in grades K through 8 would be better served at SS. John and Paul School in Ashtabula. Father Thomas has pledged his support and assistance to those families who choose to continue their children’s Catholic school education at SS. John and Paul School. In a press release, diocesan officials said, “Throughout their history the parish communities of St. Frances Cabrini and St. Mary have demonstrated tremendous commitment to the operation of a Catholic elementary school in Conneaut and have been very supportive. They can point with pride to this dedication and to their role in providing quality Catholic education to generations of students. However, the enrollment decline of recent years has presented a significant challenge and called for alternative ways to provide Catholic school education for Conneaut families.” In making the announcement, Bishop Tobin said, “Since 1959 St. Frances Cabrini Parish has provided Catholic education to the Conneaut community, and in cooperation with St. Mary Parish since 1972, St. Frances Cabrini School has been a strong educational presence and witness for the Gospel. I thank these parish communities for their generosity and commitment over these 43 years, and encourage families to continue their children’s Catholic education at SS.
