Two receive first pastorates; two pastors change parishes

Duties added for chaplain, pastor

In priest personnel assignments announced this week, two diocesan priests have received their first pastorates, two pastors will move to new parishes in the same role, and two other priests will take on additional duties beyond their current role.

Father Pat Ferraro, associate pastor at Hubbard St. Patrick, will become pastor of Streetsboro St. Joan of Arc Parish on July 1.

Father Charles Poore, associate pastor at Girard St. Rose Parish, will become pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Youngstown, effective May 13. He will also become administrator of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Youngstown, effective July 1.

Father John Trimbur, pastor of Campbell St. John the Baptist Parish, will become pastor of Niles Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish effective May 13.

Father Thomas Ungashick, pastor of Leetonia St. Patrick, will become pastor of Maximo St. Joseph Parish effective July 1.

Father William Petrunak, chaplain at Warren John F. Kennedy High School, will continue in that role while adding additional duties as administrator of Struthers Holy Trinity Parish, effective July 1.

Father Stephen Wassie, pastor of Jefferson St. Joseph Parish, will continue in that role while adding additional duties as administrator of Kingsville St. Andrew Parish.

FATHER FERRARO, new pastor of Streetsboro St. Joan of Arc, is a Youngstown native. He graduated from Lowellville High School in 1983 and earned a bachelor of arts in philosophy from Youngstown State University in 1987. He graduated from the Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s of the West Seminary with a master’s in divinity in 1992 and was ordained June 13, 1992, by Bishop James W. Malone in St. Columba Cathedral. Following ordination, Father Ferraro became associate pastor at Youngstown St. Christine Parish, where he served until being named associate at Poland Holy Family in 1998. He became associate pastor at Hubbard St. Patrick in July 2001.

FATHER POORE, new pastor of Youngstown Sacred Heart Parish and administrator of Youngstown St. Rose of Lima, is a native of Conneaut. He attended Lakeview Elementary School and Conneaut High School, where he graduated in 1980. He earned a bachelor of arts in history from Pontifical College Josephinum, Worthington, Ohio, in 1984 and graduated from Mount St. Mary’s of the West Seminary, Cincinnati, in 1989. He was ordained June 10, 1989, by Bishop James W. Malone in St. Columba Cathedral. Following ordination, he was named associate pastor at Boardman St. Charles (1989-92), Canton St. Michael (1992-98), Austintown St. Joseph (1998) and Girard St. Rose (1998-present).

FATHER TRIMBUR, new pastor of Niles Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is a son of that parish. He graduated from Niles McKinley High School and attended Youngstown State University. He earned a bachelor’s from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, in 1970, entering St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colo. He was ordained for the Denver Archdiocese May 25, 1974. He returned to the Youngstown Diocese in 1978, serving as associate pastor at Warren St. James, Canton St. Joan of Arc, Austintown St. Joseph and Austintown Immaculate Heart of Mary. He returned to St. Joseph as pro-tem administrator in 1987 and in May 1988 became pro-tem pastor of St. Catherine Parish, Lake Milton. In August 1988, he was named pastor of Mantua St. Joseph Parish, where he served until being named pastor of Campbell St. John the Baptist in 1989. In 1991, he assumed additional duties as pastor of Youngstown St. Stephen of Hungary. In 1995, he was named pastor of Campbell St. Lucy in addition to his pastorate at Campbell St. John.

FATHER UNGASHICK, new pastor of Maximo St. Joseph Parish, is a native of Canton. He attended St. Joseph School and Lincoln High School before entering St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary’s of the West seminaries in Cincinnati, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He was ordained June 12, 1976, by Bishop James W. Malone at St. Columba Cathedral. Father Ungashick served as associate pastor of Boardman St. Luke Parish (1976-80), Warren St. Mary (1980-84) and Canton St. Joan of Arc (1984-88) before being named pastor of Andover Our Lady of Victory and Kinsman St. Patrick parishes in July 1988. He served there until being named pastor of Leetonia St. Patrick in July 1995.

FATHER PETRUNAK, chaplain at Warren John F. Kennedy High School who will assume additional duties as administrator of Struthers Holy Trinity Parish, is a native of Struthers, where he graduated from Holy Trinity School. He attended Ursuline High School and graduated from Struthers High School prior to entering St. Gregoryand Mount St. Mary of the West seminaries, Cincinnati. He was ordained by Bishop Emmet Walsh on May 30, 1959, at St. Columba Cathedral. Father Petrunak was named associate pastor of Warren SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish. In 1966 he joined the faculty of Ursuline High School, teaching and serving as dean of boys, until he was named pastor of Orwell St. Mary in 1980. He returned to Ursuline as religious education director and in 1986 was named pastor of Austintown Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. He was named head of the Mahoning County North deanery in 1989. He was named pastor of Middlebranch Little Flower Parish in 1995 and chaplain at Warren John F. Kennedy High School in 1996. He also served as director for a time of the now-defunct Father Kane Camp.

FATHER WASSIE, pastor of Jefferson St. Joseph Parish who will assume additional duties as administrator of Kingsville St. Andrew, is a native of Conneaut. He attended Conneaut St. Mary School and Ashtabula St. John High School before entering St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary of the West seminaries in Cincinnati. He was ordained Dec. 1, 1979, by Bishop James W. Malone at St. Columba Cathedral. Father Wassie served as associate pastor of Warren St. Pius X Parish while also in the chaplaincy program at Youngstown’s North Side Hospital. He also served as associate pastor at East Liverpool St. Aloysius Parish (1985-88) and Ravenna Immaculate Conception (1988-93) before being named pastor of Jefferson St. Joseph in July 1993.
