Back to Exponent Menu Printer Friendly Page   LOCAL FEATURES Friday, July 19, 2002 Ravenna IC boasts 5 high school valedictorians for ‘02 RAVENNA – The eighth grade class of 1998 at Immaculate Conception School here was always a class of overachievers who pushed each other to be the best. This year, all graduated from their area high schools with better than a 3.0 average (many attaining a 3.5 or higher), and all plan to pursue higher education. Of special note is that five were valedictorians at their area high schools this year. Joanna Edwards, Whitney Harkcom, and Anna Pischera shared the valedictorian title at Ravenna High School. Geno Luketic shared the valedictorian honor at Rootstown High School and Jonathan Rose shared the award at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. All were members of the National Honor Society. Each of these students said their motivation for achieving their best came to them from Martha Budd, their science teacher at IC. Besides her outstanding academic record, Joanna Edwards is known for her singing and playing the flute. She has served as a catechetical aide in the parish CCD program for four years, in addition to her extracurricular activities. She plans to continue her education at Walsh College in North Canton. Whitney Harkcom won many academic awards and lettered in basketball, soccer and track. She won leadership awards, was active on many school clubs, and plans to study history and business at Heidelberg College. Besides excelling academically, Anna Pischera lettered in volleyball, basketball and track. As a member of the leadership club, she has served the community in planning and running the freshman orientation camp, among other public service. She plans to attend Theil College in Greenville, Pa., to study chemistry and elementary education. Geno Luketic, an Eagle Scout, has both academic and athletic varsity letters. His many extracurricular activities include being a Rootstown High School peer mediator and an altar server at Immaculate Conception for eight years. He held a varsity letter for instrumental keyboarding and was his school’s Homecoming King. He plans to attend Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, studying dentistry. Jonathan Rose, a National U.S. Mathematics Award winner, is also an Eagle Scout. He lettered in track and was president of the Drama Club, in addition to his other extracurricular involvement. He has been a member of the Immaculate Conception Summer Drama Club and assisted as an altar server.
