Back to Exponent Menu Printer Friendly Page   LOCAL FEATURES Friday, August 30, 2002 Warren St. Mary observes 100th year for church building The church and its members reflected the life and culture of Warren through the 20th century, benefiting from economic booms, the growth of the city and surrounding areas, the establishment of other downtown and nearby churches, businesses and industries; and suffering through periods of recession and depression, world wars and conflicts, unemployment and early into the century, the activities of the Ku Klux Klan. Succeeding priests to Father Dwyer were Fathers Charles Moseley (1913-1919), J.P. McGoogan (1919-1922), Emil Schaider (1922-1927), Monsignors Edward Fasnacht (1927-1960), William Dunn (1960-1970), Joseph Malik (1970-1984) and Bernard Schmalzried (1984-present). Five months after his arrival, Father Schaider opened the first St. Mary’s School on Sept. 8, 1922. The Wood estate on High St. N.E. became the convent. In 1923, he purchased two city lots at 108-110 N. Elm St. on which he planned to build a larger school. Aug. 18, 1925, was a special day for Father Schaider; it was the groundbreaking for the new school and also the 18th anniversary of the celebration of his first Mass. The new school building was started in Oct. 1925 and dedicated Sept. 19, 1926. It no longer belongs to the parish, but is part of Notre Dame School. St. Mary Parish became part of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown in 1943. Many priests have provided distinguished service to the church. Some of those with the longest tenure include Monsignors Edward Fasnacht and William Dunn, Father Joseph Malik and the current pastor, Father Bernard Schmalzried. In March 1993 Father Schmalzried organized a restoration and preservation committee to review the needs of the present church. A renovation committee was consequently established. The sanctuary was restored to its original appearance by 1998 and included the installation of four stained glass windows on the surrounding walls. The original windows were removed more than 50 years ago and their disappearance is still a mystery. However, the original “Memorial Windows,” one on each side of the church, entitled “The Ascension of Our Divine Lord” and “Our Lady of Mt. Carmel,” are still in place today. St. Mary’s currently has about 1,200 families. The parish staff, led by Father Schmalzried, includes Father Thomas Spisak; Humility of Mary Sister Kathleen Steiner, administrative assistant; Sister Adele Vecchione, a member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, director of music and liturgy; Kathleen Sweet, director of religious education; Sharon Novorsky, rectory housekeeper; and James Edgar, custodian.
