Diocesan Ministry Convocation set Oct. 26 at YSU’s Kilcawley

“Living for the Lord” is the theme for the Diocese of Youngstown’s Ministry Convocation to be held at Youngstown State University Kilcawley Center 8 a.m.-4:30p.m. Oct. 26.

Redemptorist Father William Headley, Ph.D., will deliver the morning keynote, “Making Peace in the 21st Century”; Patrick Madrid will deliver the afternoon keynote, “Search and Rescue.”

Convocation 2002 will offer 38 workshops for an anticipated audience of approximately 800 persons in various parish ministries throughout the diocese. This annual event, sponsored by the Department of Pastoral and Educational Services and the Department of Catholic Charities, celebrates the gifts and develops the skills of those who share faith with adults, youth, and children.

Father Headley is an American sociologist, counselor; and university professor. He serves as deputy executive director of Policy and Strategic Issues (PSI) of Catholic Relief Services (CRS). As director of PSI, Father Headley supports the agency in creating a justice-based framework to guide CRS’ relief and development programs in 90 countries where the agency serves. He participates with CRS’ Executive Management Team in its guidance of the institution’s overall direction. He has served as presenter, facilitator, author, and adviser in conflict transformation in numerous national and international contexts.

Father Headley’s morning keynote will focus on the Catholic Church’s role in international peace making, the 20th anniversary of the U.S. bishops’ peace pastoral, and the theology of global solidarity. He will also offer a dialogue on “Practical Peace Building in a Troubled World: You and the CRS” in one of the breakout sessions.

Patrick Madrid is the publisher of Envoy Magazine, an award-winning Catholic journal of apologetics and evangelization, and the author of several books on apologetics. Madrid hosts two Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) television and radio series: “Pope Fiction” and “The Truth about Scripture and Tradition.” He is also the executive producer of the Envoy Communications radio program, “Right Here, Right Now.” Madrid has conducted apologetics and evangelization conferences at parishes and universities across the United States, throughout Europe, in Asia, and in Latin America.

His afternoon keynote (“Search and Rescue”) will challenge participants to evangelize themselves and others, strengthen their faith-sharing skills, and bring themselves and others closer to Christ and the Church. He will offer a question-and-answer forum during a later breakout session.

Other breakout sessions will cover topics such as catechesis, liturgy, family life, stewardship, medical ethics, youth evangelization, parish pastoral councils, web design, and more. The exhibits, open at designed times throughout the day, will showcase various religious goods stores, religious education publishers, and diocesan offices.

Registration is $25 before Sept. 27 and $30 thereafter. Group discounts are available. Walk-ins are welcome. Participants are eligible for 5 hours of religious education certification credit. School teachers employed by the Diocese of Youngstown may be eligible to earn professional development credit for State of Ohio Certification. For registration information, contact the Diocese of Youngstown Office of Religious Education by phone: 330-744-8451, fax: 330-742-6448, or e-mail: sgreco@youngstowndiocese.org.
