Back to Exponent Menu Printer Friendly Page   Friday, December 14, 2007 December 14 Deaths Nicholas Speis Sr., 70 A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Dec. 10 in St. Columba Cathedral, Youngstown, for Nicholas Speis Sr., 70, who died Dec. 6 at Jameson Memorial Hospital, New Castle, Pa. He was the father-in-law of James Shagla, a freelance photographer for the Exponent. Mr. Speis was born Aril 21, 1937, in Campbell, a son of Drosos “Russell” and Margaret E. May Speis. He was a structural iron worker for 42 years, retiring from Local No. 207, and worked at Medi-Rx for the last seven years. He was a member of St. Columba Parish, the NRA and the Lowellville Rod & Gun Club. Mr. Speis helped build the new St. Joseph Church in Austintown, where he was been a member of the Men’s Club and a past usher. A 1956 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, he attended Westminster College. He is survived by his wife, the former Gladys Koval, whom he married Sept. 12, 1959; a daughter, Diane Shagla of Youngstown; three sons, Nicholas Speis II of Lowellville, Leonard Speis of Munhall, Pa., and Eric Speis of New Albany, Ohio; a sister, Marge Virgallito of Beaver Creek, Ohio; a brother, John Speis of Ravenna; and nine grandchildren, Jimmy, Olivia, Tristan, Nathaniel, Rachel, David, Tyler, Evan and Abigail.
